What is Cognitive Behavior Therapy?

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is an empirically-based psychotherapy that is highly effective for treating numerous problems and has been shown to be as effective as drug treatment for depression and the anxiety disorders.

CBT is a practical, present-focused, skills-based approach to treatment where the client and therapist work collaboratively to understand and develop strategies to overcome symptoms, solve problems and improve functioning. The therapist is active, teaching skills to manage the thoughts and behaviors that contribute to the client's problems. The client does homework outside of the therapy sessions to practice the skills learned in therapy. CBT is also "transparent" with the therapist and client setting clear, measurable goals for therapy and monitoring progress towards those goals together.
